This piece serves as a pendant to the Paesaggio boscoso con scena di caccia and exemplifies Domenichino’s skill in portraying the relationship between humans and nature. The handling of light and the river landscape shows the influence of contemporary Flemish painting. In the foreground, two fishermen work near the riverbank, while a boat with a musician and rower prepares to depart. The middle ground features other boats and, to the left, a group of washerwomen tending laundry near the shore.
Dated around 1603, this work is also in the Pinacoteca Nazionale of Bologna.
