Autoritratto (1635 ca.)

Francesco Albani: Autoritratto

This self-portrait by Francesco Albani, dated around 1630, resembles the more famous version held in the Uffizi Gallery, from which it likely derives. The artist portrays himself with natural ease and a touch of vanity, typical of a man in his fifties, still full of vitality and seemingly content with a serene life, as described by his biographers. His appearance matches the description by Count Carlo Cesare Malvasia—author of Felsina Pittrice, a history of Bolognese painting—who depicts him as of medium stature, noble bearing, robust build, and fair complexion. The painting dates to around 1635 and is kept at the Pinacoteca Nazionale of Bologna
