Via Luigi Serra

Via Luigi Serra, located in the Navile district of Bologna, is a street that connects Via Alessandro Tiarini to Via Francesco Albani. Its name dates back to October 19, 1921, when it was dedicated to Luigi Serra, a Bolognese painter.
This street is part of a broader context, being included in the ancient route of Via dell’Arcoveggio, a historic path that has undergone various changes and updates over time.

Below is one of the works left as a legacy by Luigi Serra:

Luigi Serra (1846-1888)

Luigi Serra, born in Bologna in 1846, began his artistic training in 1858 and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna from 1863. In 1866, he moved to Florence to specialize in 15th-century Tuscan art and later visited Rome, Vienna, and Turin. Among his main works are The Flute Player and Michelangelo at the Bedside of His Dying Servant. In 1877, he settled in Rome and completed several important commissions, such as The Entry of the Catholic Army into Prague. Serra also participated in the Bolognese League for Popular Education, and in 1880 he was appointed corresponding academician of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna. Despite professional disappointments, he completed some significant works such as The Wreath Makers (1885) and Irnerius (1886). Serra died prematurely in 1888 at the age of 42. He was also a correspondent for newspapers and magazines, writing about art, politics, and culture. His personal archive is preserved at the Municipal Library of the Archiginnasio of Bologna.
